Garric Greyhair, Hill Giant and Jewelsmith-Artificer

Garric Greyhair lives in the hills a day's trek from several small towns in the frontier. His well-built stone house that butts against a large hill is a sure sign of a hot meal and a mug of beer and warm hearth. His jewelry is sought-after, whenever someone needs something involving earth or fire magic.

The hill giants in this campaign were heavily influenced by the stone giants in The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen R. Donaldson. Jewelsmith-Artificers are mages that produce magical jewelry, capable of holding spells.

Unwin the Warped of the West, Mage

History and campaign notes

Unwin woke up about five years ago in the gutter of a city in Sergontium of Arden. He had no memory of his past. The scars on his chest were fresh wounds at that time. In the intervening years, he has recovered only small fragments of that previous history: magical training in a sort of magical college, some brief childhood memories in a small village he doesn't recognize, mundane interactions with people he doesn't know. No serious clues as to his origins. His memory of the past five years is unimpaired.

He has survived by living on the streets when necessary and thievery when opportune. His tastes run towards magical items, some of which he keeps. He has done quite well lately and rarely wants for much, except real friends.

Unwin has several genetic mutations: his black eyes have no whites and register into the infra-red range of the electromagnetic spectrum, his intelligence is heightened, and he doesn't seem to age very quickly. He obviously doesn't know how old he is and is unaware of this last mutation. He wears the sunglasses to hide his eyes, but likes to take them off at just the right moment to really give people a scare.

Krellan Barshaw, Thief

History and campaign notes

Krellan was born in the largest city of the Morius Protectorate. His mother was a high-class courtesan and his father was a count. He has not been acknowledged. His mother is now the madame of a four-star brothel called The Inn of the Sliding Veil. His three half-sisters are all courtesans in the brothel. His younger brother is a member of the Thieve's Guild. Krellan has some training as a gigolo.

Krellan joined the Thieve's Guild when he was 16. He worked on a few burglaries, honing his thieving skills. At one point, a group of adventurers went to the Guild to hire a thief to help them in an expedition to a dragon's lair. Krellan was assigned to the group based on a lottery (he was the short straw). Amazingly, the group defeated the dragon and Krellan survived, but the group found that the dragon didn't have much treasure. They were able to sell the corpse for some money, but vast wealth was not a result. Krellan did get some nice dragon scale armor from the enterprise.

Krellan decided to stay with the group, since he had acquired a taste for adventure.

Sir Marcus Alton, Knight-Errant

History and campaign notes

Marcus Alton was the third son of a knight of little renown. He was of only average strength, and not very brave. His small size did not predispose him to warrior training.

While squire to a very poor knight (who else would take him), adventure brought them together with an priest of Tloluvin. The party had a battle in a cave against a balrog, and Marcus was severely injured and dying. The priest asked him if he would devote his soul to Tloluvin. If he did this, the power of his lord would save him. Not wanting to die, Marcus agreed to commit his soul to the chaos god. The priest summoned the Dark Lord, and Marcus was infused with the power of the god. When he woke, he body had been transformed: his strength was as great as any man known, and his bravery was very great. He also had the chilling blue eyes of a killer, the mark of Tloluvin's Chosen.

Marcus completed his training as a knight, and now wanders from place to place, fighting for the cause of Chaos and Tloluvin.

Einar Truetale, Jongleur

History and campaign notes

I was born in the trade city of Stormstone on the island of Selidor. My father was a jongleur who traveled from town to town sharing his stories, poems and songs for a drink or a meal here, a few coppers or silvers there. After several years, his fame had grown considerably and he was able to make a good living at it. One day, the king asked him to entertain at court. My father so greatly impressed the king, that the king offered him a position as court entertainer. My father nearly turned him down, because he loved his carefree, wandering lifestyle. But then a wondrous thing occurred -- he fell in love with one of the ladies-in-waiting. His love for my mother was strong a true, and my father accepted the position at court, and proceeded to court my mother. They soon married and settled down to life in the king's castle. My father still traveled often, following the king on his exploits, or wandering from town to town, but he always returned as quickly as he could to his family. I was the first-born and I have six brothers and sisters. I seem to have inherited both his talent and his wanderlust.

How would I describe myself? Well, I love to eat and drink. Unfortunately, it wreaks havoc with my waistline. That's the trouble with being a gourmand. I appreciate beauty in many forms, especially female forms. I have a knack for conversation, and therefore I am rarely lonely. I admit I have my faults, greatest of which is my gambling. I have been known to fumble weapons from time to time, especially arrows, but I don't make a habit of it.

I take great pleasure in my work, I break into song or verse readily, and everyone of course enjoys my stories. My best story is The Legacy of Spellsender, better known as "Slingsby's Folly". This is a personal account of Baron Slingsby Spellsender's brave attempt to raid the Dragon King's lair. I enjoy telling it every chance I get so that everyone will know of the great deeds of this resourceful mage.

I've traveled with Spellsender's companions on many great and dangerous adventures. These form the basis for most of my songs and stories. I plan on remaining in the company of these fine gentlemen as long as they continue having exciting journeys to write about. I am not in the least deterred by my very long absence; in fact, it reinforces my desire to adventure all the more. The world has been without the chronicles of these heroes long enough. I hope to convince my friends to visit all the Wonders of the World. Having seen the Stairs of Algernon and the inside of the Dreaded Keep, and survived it, I greatly desire to the the rest.

At this time, I'd like to acknowledge Toric Sigonel, may he rest in peace. On Slingsby's raid on the Dragon King's lair, I was injured unto death and saved only by the auspices of Toric. I owed him a life debt, which was not repaid before his untimely death in a later sojourn with Spellsender.

Random notes: fable about a frustrated mage who cannot find the book he wants in a library; The Legacy of Spellsender (AKA Slingsby's Folly): the Baron Spellsender's heroic attempt to take the Dragon King's lair in the Vale of Shadows; The Horrible Tale of the Awesome Mri; The Account of the Stairs of Algernon; The Story of Korrick and the Ring of Petrefaction; The Story of Korrick's Brush with Death and the Encounter of the Zombies. The Heroic Tale of the Meeting of Euchuar, the ancient dragon, and the flight of Slingsby; Ravenscrag Castle; The Quest for the Book of the Gatemasters on the Isle of the Dragonmaster: wraith and necromancer; The Defeat of the Balrogs ("Here comes Arioch and his Balrog chorus." I killed one!); The End of the Quest for the Book of the Gatemasters beneath Slingsby's castle and taking it to Euchuar; The following quest to bring one of the great Dark Councillors, a necromancer, to Euchuar; The circle of standing stones and the barrow wights.

Ian MacBruann, Celtic Warrior

Ian MacBruann is a Celtic warrior from Northern Belgae. Though ugly and rough-tongued, his physical prowess, intelligence and bravery have earned him a place in the Companions of the Silver Blade, a fraternal group of heroic adventurers. At a festival or other special occasion, Ian would make quite an impression in his exquisite kilt, girdle, brat, boots, and horned helmet of the Tuatha De Danaan, all gifts from the King Niall, and the beautiful tattoos around his right eye.

History and campaign notes

Ian was born in northern Belgae, first of three children to a Flaith blacksmith/armorer. Though ugly and rough-tongued, his physical prowess, intelligence and bravery earned him some respect before he left his family to adventure. He participated in the first battle between the Belgae and the Red Branch. Thereafter, he followed the Companions of the Silver Blade. During that time, they rescued the sons of the Trynovantian filid from the Iceni, they rescued Naressa, daughter of Nuada from the Selgovae wedding, after which they participated in the Beltane festival with Niall and Nath. At this point, he was accepted as a Companion of the Silver Blade. The second battle against Ulster and the Red Branch followed, during which he:

  • fought against Conn
  • killed Donegil MacFinn, nephew of the ri ruirecht of the Red Branch, and lost his right eye in the process,
  • the eye was replaced by the Eye of a Hero by the druid.

In the battle two days later, he followed Beldbecht, and needed the Chalice to survive. During the trip back to Brigantes, in Connaught, a great storm was abated, a troll was fought, the troll's lair was an old druid's temple, "the pass, the big bang, and the sacrifice", the satyr and the harpess (the wandering call of nature), and the fallen star. The great warrior-wight of Teutates, Padwir, one fo the first warriors across the ocean, fairy lover whose soul was in a tree, and the kashel of Iceni - Magnovantes, and the ambush of Icenian followers. Once back in Brigantes, the parade through the kashels of Brigantes, the book is returned to the cloud giant, the unnatural snowstorm, the investing of the kashel taken by the Belgae, the meeting with the norsemen from the cloud giant's castle, the shade presense, he met Yrsa (Yahoo!), 200 norsemen join us, the big battle - Fomors and Belgae from the southeast. I was one of Beldbecht's eight captains with 1000 men under my command.
